The purpose of education is to prepare students to lead a purposeful and happy life. Educators need to deliver learning which helps students find joy in what they learn and meaning in what they do.

When planning the school curriculum, educators must develop learning content that develops self-awareness, improves mental wellness, builds character, boosts confidence in students and enables them to deal with problems and challenges confidently.

The approach should shift from teacher domination to learner participation and from rote learning to competency-based learning to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

The eight core competencies that educators need to integrate into their curriculum to make students’ educational journey meaningful include curiosity, creativity, criticism, communication, collaboration, compassion, composure, and citizenship.

Curiosity

Curiosity is the ability to ask questions and explore how the world works.

Encouraging students to ask questions in the classroom will deepen their curiosity and make them more engaged in the topic being taught.

Creativity

Creativity is the ability to generate new ideas and apply them in practice.

Students’ creativity skills should be encouraged as it will promote thinking, problem-solving, and innovation, give them a sense of purpose, and inspire them to be lifelong learners.

Criticism (Critical Thinking)

Criticism is the ability to analyse information & ideas and to form reasoned arguments and judgments.

Developing critical thinking skills in students is essential as it will enable them to know how to make use of offline/online data or information, how to incorporate it correctly in their life and how to determine the truth from fallacy.

Communication

Communication is the ability to express thoughts and feelings clearly and confidently in a range of media and forms.

Students should be encouraged to communicate their thoughts and express their feelings in verbal, written, and other forms of media.

Collaboration

Collaboration is the ability to work constructively with others.

Teachers can plan activities/projects that give students the opportunity to work and collaborate, and to learn from each other which in turn boosts their confidence and self-esteem.

Compassion

Compassion is the ability to empathize with others and act accordingly.

Behavioural problems like bullying and violence stem from the inability of students to empathize with others.

A culture of compassion in schools will allow teachers to understand the plight of their students and also encourage students to be sensitive to the needs of the people around them.

Composure

Composure is the ability to connect with the inner life of feelings and develop a sense of personal harmony and balance.

Students need to develop compassion not only for others but also for themselves. Hence, strengthening social emotional skills in students is crucial as it will help them to understand and manage their feelings/emotions and deal with anxiety and stress.

Citizenship

Citizenship is the ability to engage constructively with the society and to participate in the processes that sustain it.

Developing a sense of citizenship will enable students to be sensitive to the current events of the world around them, understand and have an opinion on their rights, the responsibility of the government and the laws that protect them.
