Robots are gradually entering our lives. Yes, robots are no longer science fiction, but a reality which would transform the way we work in our day to day lives. Ever since, iRobot first developed Roomba- the famous robotic vacuum cleaner, the stress towards developing robotic technology to make processes more efficiently has been growing for years.

In such an age, it becomes essential to teach children the art of programming robots. However, most schools still haven’t incorporated robotics as part of their course curriculum. However, there are plenty of resources available on the internet for parents and teachers, for example, robot kits such as VEX Robotics, simple programmable robots such as Sphero balls, and lesson plans to teach the art of robotics to students.

Teaching robotics as a subject can have many advantages apart from making it extremely fun for students. Some of these advantages are:

• It enables children to become motivated and more engaged in Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT) through observation, experimentation, inference, drawing, model, building, rational reasoning, testability etc.

• To create curiosity, excitement, and exploration among students and as a result, improve their learning process.

• To create a culture of innovation and promoting creative problem solving among children

• Robotics can also be used as a means to introduce computer programming which is otherwise too complex to teach.

• Job and opportunities in robotics are growing tremendously and teaching children such a vital skill is extremely important in today’s world.

• A deep understanding of how robots work and making new robots for doing different tasks is a skill which is going to become a must learn. The faster we realize it and train the younger generation about it, the better it would be for the future.
